8 Thursday EveningsSeptember 17 - November 19 (no class on Oct 1 or Nov 5) 6:00-8:15pm PacificCost: $275
If you’ve been curious about how to transform pieces of writing into a larger collection, if you know you have a book in you but you’ve never been able to figure out where to start, or if you find yourself with a pile of hand-written journals begging to be molded into something more—something that can be shared and mark a milestone in your journey as a writer—this workshop is for you.
In this space you’ll be supported by a published poet in a step-by-step, week-by-week process to grow your own chapbook manuscript. Chapbooks usually hover in the range of 20–40 pages and can be built from any writing style, including poetry, prose, short stories or creative non-fiction.
If you have a well of past writing to draw from, this process may be more easeful in the time allowed. However, you are welcome in this workshop space even if you have just begun your writing practice and are curious about cultivating writing toward book form!
While we will each be building our own manuscripts, I believe storytelling to be a community process so we will spend time in this series reading and mindfully sharing gentle reflection on others’ writing.
In addition to our 8 group gatherings, you are also invited to schedule one 30-minute individual support/strategy/feedback session with me (optional and focused on the need/topic of your choosing!).
This journey will take place in three phases:
Inspiration, generation & organization:
During this first phase we will generate some new writing (which may or may not be used in your manuscript), explore methods to transcribe and organize writing, learn from other writers’ manuscript tips and techniques, and explore the “voice” and intention/themes of our manuscripts.
Drafting, sequencing & refining:
During the second phase, we will gently workshop individual pieces to gain editing feedback, develop the arc, sequence and sections of our drafts and determine a title.
Reflection, next steps & sharing:
During the final phase, we will gently workshop our complete manuscript drafts, as well as learn about a variety of options for the next steps after finishing a manuscript (how to submit to journals/presses and options for self-publishing, bookmaking and other ways to share and distribute your writing).
This workshop will take place with a minimum of 5 participants and a maximum of 10 participants.
