Come to one or come to all!
a woman can’t survive
by her own breath
alone
she must know
the voices of mountains
she must recognize
the foreverness of blue sky….
from “Fire” by Joy Harjo
Begin your day with the spark of connection—to your creativity, your truth and to a warm-hearted writing community. A seat is waiting for you beside the Fire.
These hour-long, drop-in writing circles will be offered on Wednesdays in January and February of 2023 on Zoom. They are open to anyone who has taken part in one of Birch’s Poetic Medicine series through Portland Women Writers. The cost for each drop-in session is $9.
At the top of the circle, a poem will be shared and followed by about fifteen minutes of writing time. We then will shift to optional sharing time, using break-out rooms if the group is large. Some of the prompt poems will follow the Medicine of Winter themes, while others will be picked solely for their ability to delight and ignite our writing.
Please contact Birch at ebircht@hotmail.com for information. This email address is the best way to find out about Birch’s Poetic Medicine series in 2023.
feedback from past participants:
Birch brings me into safe community and offers a banquet of poems that enlivens my creativity. I return often and enthusiastically. Her years of training with John Fox and Angeles Arrien weave through all she offers with humor, kind intelligence, and grace.
With Birch I can dive deep, find the unexpected, and surface laughing.

Your particular facilitation style was so lovely to experience. I left the session this morning awash with gratitude for you as facilitator and the circle as a whole.
~Mare Biddle
I love Birch’s workshops. I like her methods, which allowed more emotional response that I think allow us all to go deeper. We all rode the waves smoothly with her compassionate and loving guidance. She always gives such beautiful feedback in writing circles, and that skill along with the skillful holding of the container make for a great experience.
~Dr. Karen Waters
“I totally enjoyed the experience yesterday. It was invigorating to write as part of a circle of women, and you held the container so beautifully. I especially appreciated the attention and encouragement you gave to each writer.”
~Lorraine Anderson
I love these weekly groups because there’s always a moment, where you feel ready to go deeper, and it’s so good. Then other women risk more as well. It’s magic. Thank you for your expert holding of space, and the nurturing environment. I don’t want it to end!
